Working Out
Gym Memberships (hours, approx price)--
The Rush downtown -- open 24/7 ($24/mo, some deals to add people on for $19/mo) (ask if $19/mo is available if you get in on a special)
The YMCA: Located in West End, the Y is awesome and family friendly- it’s $24/month for students, and its the closest to the hospital and is the only gym here with a pool!
Student gym near fishbowl -- membership cost included as a part of student tuition.
Comp Rehab Plaza -- this is a secret gem of a place where a lot of residents work out.
Golds gym
Couple of Crossfit gyms in WS ($$$, but if you can afford definitely an option, students get a considerable discount)
Pilates/Yoga: Village Yoga on 1055 Northwest Blvd (http://villageyoga.ws/) is a go-to for some students here, as well as Yoga Gallery on 633 N. Trade St. (http://www.yogagallery.net/). Additionally, Lindsey Porter in the Class of 2016 runs a FREE Yoga class on Thursday evenings for everyone in the med school. It is fantastic, great for people at all levels (even beginners), and so relaxing before an exam.
Places to go Running
Bolton Park on Bolton Street (they also have tennis courts and a volleyball field hidden in the back). Further exploring into the very back is a little sketchy, but there is a secret wooded area back there.
Hanes park: They have a track and a cross country course
Washington Park: probably the flattest long route in the area, there is about 6 miles of paved trail that ends at Salem Lake; the park itself also has probably the best nearby dog park in the area
Salem Lake - 7 miles of wide dirt paths around a lake with a 3+ mile paved greenway extension (The last Saturday in September the Twin Cities Track Club puts on a 30K and 7 miler -- http://www.roadraceplace.com/races/salem-lake-trail-run-30k-nc-winston-salem/)
The West End (William G. White) YMCA puts on a Half Marathon and 5K the first Saturday in December that has a great course from West End, the Buena Vista neighborhood, through Graylyn, Reynolda Gardens, to the undergrad campus and back
The Owl’s Roost Rumble is a fun trail half in April on the Bur Mil Park trails around Lake Brandt in Greensboro
Tanglewood park - 15 minutes away in Clemmons. 8+ miles of single track trails for running or mountain biking. New and very nice dog park.
Reynolda Gardens - next to the undergrad campus
Muddy Creek Greenway - out west of town off of Peace Haven, but a nice ~3 mile paved trail for running/biking/rollerblading! http://www.wsgreenways.org/index.php/muddyCreek
Tennis
Miller Park - 4 hard courts with lights
Hanes Park
Ardmore tennis courts on Melrose St.
Golf Courses
There are several quality courses in the Winston-Salem area. Tanglewood Park in Clemmons is a full-service park with 36 holes of championship golf, an 18 hole par-3 course and two driving ranges. For those who love to play but lack the big dough, Winston has two very nice municipal courses. For less than $10 with your student ID, you can walk Winston Lakes and Reynolds Park on weekday afternoons. Hillcrest is a nice course for the money.
