Bread
Bagel Station: Winston-Salem's original and best bagel bakery. You will never be able to get them out of your mind once you've had that first one. 129 Oakwood Drive, off of Stratford. 724-3959 $
Camino Bakery and Wine bar: This spot can be found in Nissen Bldg downtown on 4th Street. Their bread is delicious, desserts fantastic, and they always play good music. Can get a little busy at certain times of the day, but the baristas make it worth going to as a study spot. They're completely vegetarian and they have amazing quiches, sandwiches, and tomato pie. 310 W. 4th St. $
Chesapeake Bagel Bakery: This one is a little further away from the med center but it is a great place to study and they give 10% discount to Wake students. Actually, it is a nice stop if you are on your way to the undergrad campus to hit the books. Great sandwiches and prices. 1977 Peace Haven Rd. 774-7003.
Dewey’s Bakery/ Stone Mill Bread Co: This is the place for all those sweet rolls, cookies, pastries, pies and cakes you wish you had time to make. We recommend Dewey’s for that birthday cake you want to buy for someone when you want one step up from a grocery store. Thruway Shopping Center. $-$
Ollie’s Bakery: Located near Old Salem at 300 South Marshall St.
Panera Bread: Although a little pricey for sandwiches and pastries, it is conveniently located in Cloverdale Plaza, 2209 Cloverdale Av. Also on Hanes Mall Blvd. across from Target, 722-0900. $
Winkler's Bakery (Old Salem): In the mornings you can watch bread being made the way it was baked in Salem. Then you can buy the different daily breads. Make sure you get the ones that were baked fresh that day. The raisin bread, sugar cookies, and plain wheat and white breads are excellent. It is also quite interesting. Old Salem. $

Bobs Big Gas Subs and Pub: A new sub place that is located at the end of hanes park and close to school. It is in an old gas station so they open up the garage doors and you can play cornhole when the weather is nice. Also try their baked pickles as a side item. 901 Reynolda Road. 336.724.6600
Bonefish Grill: Amazing seafood, fantastic service! 300 South Stratford Rd. (In Thurway Shopping Center) 724-4518 $$
Breakfast of Course: One of the best places to get brunch in Winston Salem that was formerly known as Mary’s of Course but moved to a larger location. The line can look daunting sometimes, but it is well worth it and is a good place to take parents when they come visit. 723 Trade St. (336) 723-7239
Burke St. Pizza: A good place to grab some late night NY-Style pizza after hitting the bars. They now have 2 locations and they do deliver. 1140 Burke Street 336-721-0011 and 3352 Robinhood Road 336-760-4888
Cagney's Place: “Hang out with locals” near the hospital and enjoy a great breakfast. 2201 Cloverdale Ave. 724-0940 $
Cities Grill and Bar: Excellent selection of foods – steaks, kebabs, pizzas, etc. 2438 S. Stratford Rd. 765-9027 $
The Carving Board: “A W-S version of Dean and Deluca specialty foods deli.” “Gotta try the sesame noodles.” Thruway Shopping Center, Stratford Road. 748-9118 $
Ciccioni's: Their Sicilian pizza is “to die for”, says a Yankee student who was convinced she'd never get a decent slice of pizza down here. Sherwood Plaza on the corner of Robinhood & Peacehaven. 760-0041 $
Cloverdale Kitchen: Close to the hospital, in the same shopping center as Harris Teeter. “Go for breakfast, but get there early or you'll miss the biscuits.” The food is “good, cheap, and plentiful.” Also “serves home-style lunch and dinner.” Cloverdale Shopping Center. 725-4701 $-$
Diamond Back Grill: Haven for the “Winston young professional crowd.” “Cool, mature bar scene on the weekends.” Great Atmosphere for a drink near College Village. Great place to take the parents. 753 N Avalon Road. 722-0006 $-$$
Dioli’s Trattoria: Some good italian food right on 4th street. They home make all of their pastas and the tagliatelli is very tasty. 401 West 4th Street 336-331-3451
Dioli’s Italian Market: A market just down Robinhood Rd from Reynolda Village, they have a good selection of Italian cheeses and meats and have pretty good sandwiches as well.2898 Reynolda Rd. 336-724-9900.

Duke's: Recommended by locals. Vegetables, down-home cooking. “Great sausage biscuits and gravy at breakfast.” 4875 Country Club Rd. 768-3108 $-$
East Coast Wings: One of the best wing places in Winston, they have a few locations and an extensive menu. 4880 Country Club Road (336) 659-9992 and closer to school, 5014 Peters Creek Parkway (336) 784-6700.
Elizabeth's Italian: “A favorite for Reynolda Campus students especially before football and basketball games.” The food is “great and affordable.” Located at University Parkway across from the Coliseum 724-4650. There is another location at the Silas Creek Crossing shopping center. $-$
4th Street Filling Station: Classic Winston-Salem restaurant. Great atmosphere. Outside dining available in the summer. 871 West 4th Street. 724-7600 $
First Street Draught House: “Consistently satisfying food” with “some interesting options.” The chicken fingers are the best! You’ll find many folks from the class of 2011 here after a big exam. 1500 W. 1st St. 722-6950 $
The Fresh Market: “Good for a quick sandwich while grocery shopping.” Off Robinhood Road.
Foothills: A new local brewery that opened in 2004. Located on 4th street downtown. $
Grecian Corner: Quick Greek food at “reasonable prices.” Watch the “fire breath you’ll come back to school with” after lunch. “Walking distance” from the Hospital. Cloverdale. Cash only. 722-6937 $

Ichiban: Japanese, including sushi. “Distant second” behind its neighbor Kyoto’s Express for hot food, but it probably offers “the best bargain sushi in town.” 270 S. Stratford Rd. 725-3050 $-$

Jeffrey Adams: has amazing steaks and really great drinks. The vegetarian spring rolls are pretty awesome. Sit upstairs for a better view. 321 West 4th Street. 336-448-1714 $$

Jimmy the Greek Kitchen: Surprisingly, a good breakfast diner for typical breakfast items. 2806 University Pkwy. 722-0184 $

Kowloon: “Greasy, but pretty good and cheap.” You’ll probably eat Kowloon at some point during the free-lunch sweeps at the beginning of I-A, so “judge for yourself.” Cloverdale Shopping Center. 724-6907 $

The Loop Pizza Grill: Good for gourmet pizzas, milk shakes, and big salads. “Get the oreo shake for dessert.” Show your student ID for a discount. Thruway Shopping Center. $-$
Little Richards: One of the best BBQ places in winston salem. Get a chopped sandwich and load it with extra sauce. It is cash only so you know it is good. 4885 Country Club Rd.

Midtown Café and Dessertery: “Neat patio worth eating on in the spring and fall.” “Try the Caesar salad.” Good breakfast place when your parents are in town. See also the dessert section. Awesome 5 flavor pound cake. 151 S. Stratford Rd. 724-9801 $-$
Mi Pueblo: “Definitely worth trying, but only if you're five minutes or less from a private toilet." “This place is breathtakingly quick—even at the busiest times.” Task: keep tabs on the time it takes from ordering to eating and keep a log of your times. Compare throughout the course of the year. Push for a PB. “Good spot for a quick meal during hectic Block I.” Located on Stratford and 2901 Reynolda Rd. 722-5772 $-$
Nawab: North Indian Cuisine. Good and affordable lunch buffet. “The best Indian restaurant in town.” 129 S. Stratford Rd. 725-3949 $ to $
Newtown Bistro: “Cigar bar, live music, good food” at an “out-of-the-way location.” “High-class Suburban.” “Very friendly bartender—was he too friendly?” Jonestown Road. 659-8062 $$
Noma: A comfy restaurant/bar that has a nice lounge upstairs. 321 West 4th Street. (336) 703-5112
Olive Tree: Great variety – Greek, Mexican, American food available. 580 S. Stratford Rd. 723-4224 $ Try the deep fried zuccini strips.
PB’s Takeout: Recommended for its greasy fries and burgers. “Looks dingy, but the food is delicious (and greasy!)” 1412 S. Hawthorne Rd. 748-8990

Putter’s: Advertised as the “Best Steaks in Winston-Salem.” A pretty good meal, try it out and see what you think of the steaks; it is of note they charge 50 bucks for A1 or Heinz 57 sauces b/c they “don’t carry it in stock”. $$
Qdoba: Mexican Grill next to Whole Foods Grocery. “Quick and pretty good.” Free drink with student ID. “Nice little outside tables on 57 Miller Street,” new location on Hanes Mall Blvd. near Lowe’s. 724-9873 $-$
Rose and Thistle: Great place to meet for pizza and beer. 2840 Reynolda Rd. 777-0714 $-$ (depending on the amount of beer!)
River Burch Lodge: A Colorado style restaurant that has everything from cedar plank salmon to bison burgers. Has a great bar and the sweet potato chips are a great appetizer! Also a great place to take the family for Sunday brunch. 3324 Robinhood Rd.
Ronni's Restaurant: Buffalo wings. “Very popular among locals.”

Sixth and Vine: A popular new weekend downtown hangout with great appetizers, sandwiches, and entrees. Buy a bottle to share with friends at this trendy wine bar. $-$$
Senior Bravo’s: Terrific Mexican food and the best chips and salsa in town. 241 South Marshall Street
Skippy’s: Right on 4th street next to Foothills, Skippy’s serves up tasty hot dogs with homemade pretzel buns. Very unique and very tasty. 624 West 4th Street. (336) 722-3442
Sweet Potatoes: A new place for southern food- excellent, but expect to wait for a table. 529 N. Trade St., Winston-Salem. 727-4844
Szechuan Palace: Chinese. Behind the Flow dealership on Stratford Road. 3040 Healy Dr. 768-7123 $-$
Thai Sawatdee: Located literally inside the harris teeter on Cloverdale, this little thai place is a med student favorite. Walk in, order your food, go grocery shopping, then pick it up after you checkout. Try the spicy thai curry with chicken. (336) 725-1332.
Twin City Diner: Location is “key with this place.” Walking distance from school. The food “is good” but “a little pricey for your basic burger or salad.” A good place to “have a beer with your classmates on Friday afternoons.” 1425 W. 1st St. 724-4203 $-$.
The Village Tavern: The original Village Tavern is located in Reynolda Village near the Wake campus and has an excellent atmosphere. “Nice patio and a bar inside.” “There is something for everyone”: sandwiches, steaks, gourmet pizza, and Sunday brunch.
