Biking: (even exclusively) This can be done, just ask the Winkstar. He only owns a bike.
Driving: Whoa there, Horsey. So you wanna drive, eh? Take a seat over there. There are things you need to know about North Carolina’s (and Virginia’s) Speeding laws. They actually care about speeding in these states. And they enforce their surprisingly strict laws. 15 Miles per hour over the speed limit is a full blown Misdemeanor class 2. Which means you will be put into the mean, nasty, and ugly ranks of those committing simple assault, resisting an officer, and carrying a concealed weapon. To put this into perspective, other states thresholds for serious penalties such as reckless driving are around 25 to 35 over the speed limit. In Virginia the threshold is 15mph over or an absolute speed of greater than or equal to 80mph for both states.
A misdemeanor is a criminal offense and comes with a mandatory court appearance. If not handled properly, it can come with a sentence of up to 60 days in jail. Keep this in mind and when you’re on your way to Winston Salem or just travelling around NC, take your time, take in the scenery, and above all, be sure to know the laws before you break them.
