Dealing with Stress (from school, finances, relationships, etc)
It's a simple fact of life and the profession that we are all choosing that stress and woes will be unavoidable. However, just because we can't avoid stress doesn't mean it's trivial or it shouldn't affect you. Life happens to us all, and sometimes it all happens at once and it is very difficult for each one of us as the individual to get through it. Not only do you have a community of folks who are a lot more like you (and feeling a lot more like you) than you might think, but you also have the following resources you can seek out for support.
WFU behavioral health: on Jonestown Road by Mercedes dealership; provides psychiatric care and counseling sessions
Student services office: (you may end up there if you are late too much or fail or need to take a medical leave, but they can offer blunt advice that can help out too). Dr. Mark Knudson, the Associate Dean of Student Services, is wonderful and can direct you to someone that can help. He, Dr. Steve Block, and Dr. Marcia Wofford are the Deans you will work most closely with and are wonderful and supportive. If you have a problem you'd rather keep private, what you say to them will stay with them.
Student Wellness Office: Email Dr. Jamie Ungerleider if you need information or want someone to talk to. (She is positively awesome!)
Your big sib or a trusted med student: you'd be surprised exactly how many of us have or have had depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, a loved one pass away, a divorce, a broken engagement or relationship, failed an exam, or had a breakdown moment where we wondered exactly what we were doing in medical school and if we really belonged here (this was most of us -- and will be you -- at one point or another).
The Christian Medical Dental Association : offers a mentoring program with physicians.
Undergrad learning center: offers ADD and neurocognitive assessments; special testing accommodations may be possible in certain for those with true attention disorder etc.
